Get to know Loco, an active senior dog who just had a big birthday party. Although birthdays at the Spartanburg Humane Society are often marked discreetly, the staff felt they had to do something extra for Loco since it was his birthday.
Spartanburg Humane Society COO Angel Cox said, “She was wearing a birthday hat and frilly collar, and the whole staff gathered and sang to her.” “She enjoyed a sweet potato cake very much.” The bakery she works for presented her with a birthday banner for her cubicle wall.
Lots of Loco’s best pals were there, but sadly, canines were not welcome.
“She’s picky about her parents,” Cox said. When she loves you, it’s for real. However, she has nothing but hatred for the people she finds distasteful. She also despises all canine companions.
Everyone had a great time celebrating the life of the feisty little nugget they’ve known and loved for over two years, even if there were no dogs present.
In 2020, Loco’s owners gave him up to the shelter because of his ongoing health problems, and he’s since become its poster dog. She has her own own warm refuge, far from the animals and humans she prefers to avoid.
Cox said, “We moved her to a more pleasant work area.” She has many dog beds, and she uses them all.
During her time at the shelter, Loco has experienced a number of health problems.
“She was 13 when she came, heartworm positive, with thyroid disorders and hip issues, so she was not a good candidate for adoption,” Cox said.
A fierce fighter, Loco has finally proven herself. To maintain her good health, she is heartworm negative, regularly vaccinated, and takes a thyroid supplement.
Even though she’s older than most of the shelter’s residents, she’s doing well. Being a “office dog” at the shelter has stopped her from looking for a new home, but that doesn’t mean she’s happy there. Cox said that she is one of the most memorable pets they’ve ever had because of her unique nature.
